First found in County Galway in the Republic of Ireland, they are descended from Irish High King Niall of the Nine Hostages, a prince from County Tyrone who played as a key figure in repelling the Roman Army from the British Isles. A similar surname was found in County Donegal, where there are legends of a pretty maiden named Herren, a mermaid from a beautiful Irish sea kingdom who taunted sailors around the Inishowen Peninsula. They are descended from Eochy Moyvan, an old Northern Irish prince who's ancestors came with King Colla da Crioch and St. Columba from the counties of Armagh, Derry, Donegal, Tyrone, and Antrim to the Isle of Man and sea-swept Hebrides Island, founding a monastery there that laid way to Clan Donncaidh, an old Highland Scottish clan of ancient Irish origins. Dal Riata, a land of warring ancient Irish, Scottish, and Welsh Celts, Britons, and Gaels, fought the Anglo-Saxons in England, the Viking-Norse settlers near the Shetland and Orkney Islands of northern Scotland, and the ancient Norman invasion of Great Britain.
