Barret Family History

Design your own Barret Family Crest

Barrett (Barret, Barratt) is the Gaelic version of Baroid which translates to "intellectual son" or "war-like". The Barretts first appeared following the Norman invasion , hired as mercenaries from Wales. As an English surname it is thought to have been derived from the old english word meaning "quarrelsome" or "deceitful" or from a corruption of the Norman personal name Barnard, Bernhard or Berold. The surname is also common around Norfolk, England.
